Marines in World War I

With the United States entry in to World War I in April 1917, the Marines sent two Regiments to France in the summer of 1917. In October 1917, the 2nd Infantry Division was activated when the U.S. 9th Infantry and 23rd Infantry Regiments joined the 5th and 6th Marines to form the 2nd U.S. Infantry Division.

Before the division was formed the two Marine Regiments formed the 5th Marine Brigade. The Army's 9th and 23rd formed the 3rd U.S. Infantry Brigade. The other half of the division the 5th and 6th Marines came under the 4th Marine Brigade.

The first commanding officer of the division was Marine Brigadier General Charles A. Doyen. On July 28, 1918 Marine Major General John A. Lejeune assumed command of the division, and would command the division until it returned to the U.S. in August 1919.
